Filing for the 2020 legislative elections doesn’t begin until next month, but that hasn’t stopped many Western North Carolina candidates from making their intentions known early.

Electoral maps for next year's General Assembly elections have been finalized, and five districts in Western North Carolina (three House, two Senate) will see significant changes.  A state court earlier this year ruled Republicans illegally gerrymandered the districts used in the last election for their own partisan advantage, forcing new ones to be drawn in a non-partisan manner for the 2020 election.

State legislative elections are still more than a year away, but some Western North Carolina candidates have already started campaigning.

And just like in 2018, the results of the 2020 election for state candidates will likely have a lot to do with President Donald Trump.

Western North Carolina’s longest running political feud just got longer – for the fifth time in as many elections, Waynesville Democrat Rep. Joe Sam Queen’s opponent in the District 119 House race in 2020 will be Bryson City Republican Mike Clampitt.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — President Donald Trump endorsed North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis on Tuesday, delivering a significant political asset for the first-term Republican senator already facing a primary challenge for his reelection next year in the closely divided state.

Trump tweeted his "Full and Total Endorsement" to Tillis, who has faced criticisms from members of the state's GOP base questioning whether he's given full-throated support to the president.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A former North Carolina state senator is switching races, announcing Monday that he's joined the Democratic effort to unseat Republican U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis, whose seat would be a major pickup for Democrats trying to win back a Senate majority.

Cal Cunningham, a familiar name in state Democratic circles, revealed to The Associated Press that he's no longer running for lieutenant governor and has switched instead to the 2020 U.S. Senate race.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders rally last Friday at Salvage Station will likely be the first of many candidate visits to Asheville in the 2020 presidential election cycle.  A large set of circumstances - from its progressive political reputation, to the long ballot of 23 Democratic presidential candidates, to its location in a media market that straddles two states that will vote early in the 2020 primaries - should make Asheville a popular spot for candidates visit before next year's North Carolina primary in March.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A retired North Carolina financier challenging Republican U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis in next year's GOP primary says he'd stand with President Donald Trump on issues like cutting foreign aid and immigration.

Garland Tucker of Raleigh formally announced his candidacy Wednesday, two days after filing paperwork to create a campaign committee . Tucker's campaign says he made the announcement on Sean Hannity's national radio show.

North Carolina governor Roy Cooper vetoed a bill last week dealing with care for babies born after attempted abortions.  His decision sets up the first showdown in Raleigh over veto overrides since the governor's fellow Democrats gained more seats in the General Assembly in last fall's election, ending the ability of majority Republicans to override Cooper vetoes through party line votes.

The North Carolina General Assembly reconvened Wednesday in Raleigh, and bills for the coming session began to be introduced.  The power dynamic in Raleigh is much different this year, as Democrats were able to break Republican supermajorities in both chambers of the General Assembly in the 2018 legislative elections.  That means the GOP will not be able to override vetoes from Democratic Governor Roy Cooper along party line votes, as they had done numerous times during Cooper's first two years in office.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Forest has taken another step — but not a surprising one — toward running for governor in 2020.

Forest announced Monday that he has formed an "exploratory" committee to seek the GOP nomination, releasing a brief video in which he talks about building a better North Carolina.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina Democratic legislator is running for the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican incumbent Thom Tillis.

State Sen. Erica Smith, from Northampton County in the northeast, announced her 2020 bid to unseat Tillis on Saturday through social media and at a Democratic Party gathering in Charlotte. Smith is a math instructor and ordained minister first elected to the legislature in 2014.

Mecklenburg County Commissioner Trevor Fuller also announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination last week. Primaries are in March 2020.
