In 2018, the nonprofit Asheville Greenworks kept more than 161,000 pounds of hard to recycle materials out of the landfills in Western North Carolina. During free events held throughout the year in Buncombe County, volunteers collected everything from televisions to empty toothpaste tubes. The organization is kicking off it's first Hard 2 Recycle event of 2019, on Saturday, January 19th in West Asheville.
These are the items that absolutely cannot go into the recycling bin”, says Eric Bradford who is Director of Operations at Asheville GreenWorks. The event is free, although there is a drop-off charge for some items. CRT television sets and monitors require a $10 recycling fee per unit payable by cash.
The cost of recycling Styrofoam is at an all-time high, says Bradford.
Starting at this event, there is a charge for bags of Styrofoam at $1 per bag of any size and $5 per carload. Cash only.
GreenWorks will no longer be accepting Styrofoam packing peanuts at the event. However, they will be taking clean food grade Styrofoam such as egg cartons, trays and clamshell containers.
The Asheville Humane Society will be on hand collecting fencing, gates, cleaning and pet supplies. Habitat for Humanity’s Asheville ReStore will be collecting usable and working household items and building materials.
The collection will be held rain/snow or shine. Should the event need to be cancelled for any reason, GreenWorks will post notifications on its website and social media pages. For more information about this and all GreenWorks events please visit the organization’s website
