Burr's Comments on Supreme Court 'Deeply Troubling' Says Duke Law Scholar

Nov 1, 2016

US Senator Richard Burr is facing criticism for leaked audio revealing several controversial remarks he gave to a private gathering of supporters.  The tape obtained by CNN caught Burr joking about a gun magazine with Hillary Clinton on the cover and wondering why there wasn’t a bullseye on her.  Burr has apologized for that comment.  But also in the tape, Burr makes this comment regarding the Supreme Court.

“If Hillary becomes president, I’m going to do everything I can do to make sure that four years from now, we’re still going to have an opening on the Supreme Court.”

Neil Siegel is a constitutional law scholar at Duke University.  He called the remark "troubling," "without precedent" and "contrary to constitutional norms."  That full interview is above.

We've reached out to the Burr campaign for comment on Burr's remarks.

Burr is in a tight re-election race against Democrat Deborah Ross.
