Applications Accepted For Upcoming Asheville City Council Vacancy

Jul 22, 2020

Residents of the city of Asheville can apply starting next month for the upcoming vacancy on city council created by the resignation of council member Vijay Kapoor.

Kapoor announced earlier this year that he would resign his seat over the summer as he and his family are moving out of the area.  He was the top vote-getter in the last city council election in 2017.  That resignation is expected to come in August, and Kapoor said during the July 14th city council meeting that his last meeting would the next one, which occurs on July 28th.  City council will appoint his replacement to fill out the remainder of his term, which runs until December 2022.

Applications will be accepted starting August 3rd.  To be eligible, applicants must be residents of Asheville and be registered to vote in the city.  To receive the application form, call 828-259-5601 or email the city clerk at mburleson@ashevillenc.gov.  In addition to the form, applicants must submit a resume and answer six essay questions.

Separately, three Asheville city council seats are on the ballot for this November's general election.  Six candidates - Sage Turner, Keith Young, Kim Roney, Rich Lee, Nicole Townsend, and Sandra Kilgore - are running for those three spots.  Young is the only incumbent on the ballot.
