(4/9 1:00 p.m.) North Carolina has reported 929,406 confirmed cases of COVID-19, an increase of 2,509 cases from the day before. 977 are currently hospitalized statewide, a decrease of 27 from the day before. 12,248 have died of COVID-19 statewide, an increase of 24 from the day before. In the 13 North Carolina Counties in Blue Ridge Public Radio's listening area, there are 48,122 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 832 deaths. That's an increase of 151 confirmed cases and 0 deaths from the day before.

(4/6 4 p.m.) Beginning Wednesday, North Carolina is opening vaccines to Group 5, the final phase of its vaccine rollout plan. Everyone 16 and older will be able to receive the Pfizer vaccine, and anyone 18 and older can receive the Moderna or Johnson and Johnson immunization. The state's move comes 2- weeks ahead of President Joe Biden's April 19 target to make vaccines eligible for adults in all U.S. NC Health secretary Dr. Mandy Cohen says the vaccine is key to helping North Carolinians get back to normal. "Things like safely hugging a grandma, or traveling to see vaccinated family or friends, or having dinner with your vaccinated neighbors,” says Cohen who notes that new CDC guidelines say people who have been fully vaccinated can travel around the U.S. The website myspot.nc.gov has been updated with a tool that helps locate specific vaccines.
