At least one faith community in Asheville is gathering in prayer for President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration ceremony.
Jubilee! Community Church downtown is inviting members of the community to attend the safe-distanced event. Masks are required and only eight individuals will be allowed inside the gathering space at a time. Reverend Laura Collins says it's the church’s first time holding a vigil for a presidential inauguration.
“This is a pretty unusual year, I think we can all agree. And after the violence at the Capitol two weeks ago, I think many of us just felt a real need for some calming presence,” Collins said.
Collins says for those who wish to participate virtually, the vigil will be live streamed on Jubilee’s Facebook.
“Wherever you are on the political spectrum, I hope we can all come together to agree that a peaceful transfer of power is one of the hallmarks of our Democracy," Collins said. "To pray for that is a worthy thing, wherever you stand.”
Collins says the gathering space will be open to the public to pray and light candles from 9am-12pm.
