Minor League Baseball Cancels Season

There will be no baseball at McCormick Field this season

Minor League Baseball canceled its season Tuesday due to the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning the Asheville Tourists and hundreds of teams around the U.S. and Canada will not take the field this season.

Major League Baseball will hold a shortened 60-game season which is expected to start later in July.  That will include expanded rosters, which could have put a crimp in minor league rosters.  In addition, this year's MLB draft was only five rounds instead of its typical 40, which further could have limited rosters for minor league teams this year.

The Asheville Tourists have been the Colorado Rockies A-Ball affiliate in the South Atlantic League since 1994.  The team says it will reach out to ticket holders in the upcoming days to 'present multiple options' for either refunds or rolling ticket plans over to the 2021 season.

Matt Bush joined Blue Ridge Public Radio as news director in August 2016. Excited at the opportunity the build up the news service for both stations as well as help launch BPR News, Matt made the jump to Western North Carolina from Washington D.C. For the 8 years prior to coming to Asheville, he worked at the NPR member station in the nation's capital as a reporter and anchor. Matt primarily covered the state of Maryland, including 6 years of covering the statehouse in Annapolis. Prior to that, he worked at WMAL in Washington and Metro Networks in Pittsburgh, the city he was born and raised in.
