Sen. Burr on Tape Making Controversial Remarks

News & Observer of Raleigh
US Senator Richard Burr

Republican Senator Richard Burr was caught on tape joking about gun owners putting a “bullseye” on Hillary Clinton.  Senator Burr was addressing a private gathering of supporters in Mooresville.  The tape was posted to YouTube and reported on by CNN.  In it, Burr seemed to joke about violence towards Clinton.

“Nothing made me feel any better than when I walked into a gun shop, I think yesterday in Oxford, and there was copy of Rifleman on the counter.  It’s got a picture of Hillary Clinton on the front of it.  I was a little bit shocked that it didn’t have a bullseye on it.”

That comment was similar to one Donald Trump made when he suggested “second amendment people” could take matters into their own hands if Clinton were elected.  Burr supports Trump for president.  Burr apologized for his comment.  In a written statement to several news outlets, Burr said “The comment I made was inappropriate, and I apologize for it.”

But that’s not all that was on the tape.  Burr also indicated that if re-elected he would block any Supreme Court nominee put forward by Clinton.

“If Hillary becomes president, I’m going to do everything I can do to make sure that four years from now, we’re still going to have an opening on the Supreme Court.”

That comment echoes one made recently by fellow GOP Senator John McCain.  Burr is locked in a tight race with Democrat Deborah Ross.  Early voting is already underway in North Carolina.
