UNC Asheville and Eastern Band of Cherokee Agreement

Special to the Citizen-Times

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and the University of North Carolina Asheville have signed a formal agreement that may result in more members of the tribe attending the University.  Principal Chief Michell Hicks and UNC Asheville Chancellor Mary Grant signed the agreement in both Kituwah Cherokee syllabary and English last Friday.  Chancellor Grant says the agreement will lead to a deeper partnership with the Tribe.

The University will reserve up to ten slots for qualified students and the Tribe will cover tuition costs.
Chief HIcks says he's pleased with the new relationship with the University.

The agreement also calls on the University to assist students in forming an American Indian Science and Engineering Society Chapter. The Tribe will develop an internship program on the Qualla Boundary providing health care and or education experience to University students.
