Manheimer Elected Asheville Mayor

Erin Brethauer/Black Mountain News

Attorney Esther Manheimer has been elected mayor of Asheville.  Manheimer was any easy winner over her challenger, former city employee John Miall.   The polls had only been closed a little over an hour when it became clear that the current Vice Mayor would win by a comfortable  margin.  Unofficial results show she captured over 68% of the vote.

In the race for three seats on city council, new comer Gwen Wisler finished a surprising first with 28% of the vote.  The former Corporate CEO finished two hundred votes ahead of incumbents Gordon Smith and nearly a thousand votes better than Cecil Bothwell.  Wisler was delighted with her strong showing in her first bid for elective office.

Unofficial results:

Esther Manheimer    8,341

John Miall                     3,790

Gwen Wisler                 9,136

Gordon Smith               8,936

Cecil Bothwell              8,161

Mike Lanning               3,503

Jonathon Wainscott  2,641

Gwen Wisler finished first in the race for three seats on Asheville City Council. Making her first bid for elective office, Wisler out polled incumbents Gordon Smith and Cecil Bothwell.

Incumbent Cecil Bothwell was re-elected to Asheville City Council. He says his number one priority is the financial well being of the city and he will focus his attention on ousting members of the local delegation to the North Carolina General Assembly.
