Attorney Esther Manheimer has been elected mayor of Asheville. Manheimer was any easy winner over her challenger, former city employee John Miall. The polls had only been closed a little over an hour when it became clear that the current Vice Mayor would win by a comfortable margin. Unofficial results show she captured over 68% of the vote.
In the race for three seats on city council, new comer Gwen Wisler finished a surprising first with 28% of the vote. The former Corporate CEO finished two hundred votes ahead of incumbents Gordon Smith and nearly a thousand votes better than Cecil Bothwell. Wisler was delighted with her strong showing in her first bid for elective office.
