The Moth StorySLAM - Asheville

The monthly Moth StorySLAM at The Mothlight at Mr. Fred's is a huge hit! StorySLAMs are monthly competitions, where the stage is open to any and all with a story to tell on the evening's theme.

Moth shows are renowned for the great range of human experience they showcase. Each show starts with a theme, and the storytellers explore it, often in unexpected ways. Since each story is true and every voice authentic, the shows dance between documentary and theater, creating a unique, intimate, and often enlightening experience for the audience.

Asheville is one of the newest Moth StorySLAM cities and the smallest city ever selected to participate. The Asheville StorySLAM happens (usually) on the 3rd Thursday of every month at The Mothlight at Mr. Fred's in West Asheville. Tickets go on sale one week before each show and sell out within minutes.

Asheville Schedule (with descriptions for interested storytellers)

02/18/16 :
LOVE HURTS:
The Moth's annual celebration of heartbreak because what doesn’t break you, makes you eager to vent! (But please, make sure all venting is in story form!) Prepare a five-minute tale about a love that made you go OUCH. The agony of deferred love! The misery of good love, gone bad! The anguish of one-way love! Bring stories of your heart, kicked to the curb by the people or places or things you love...or used to love. Love that "Hurts So Good" also welcome. -- *Tickets become available one week before the show, at 3pm ET.

03/17/16:
THE DARK SIDE -
Prepare a five-minute story about the underworld, guilty pleasures, life under a log, succumbing to your less than enlightened self or participating in activities you know are naughty, deplorable or decidedly un-sunny. *Tickets become available one week before the show, at 3pm ET.

04/21/16:
JOKERS
- Prepare a five-minute story about comic exploits. Class clowns and practical jokers. The humorless and silly. Punch lines and laugh tracks, bombing on stage or slaying them at the water cooler. How many storytellers does it take to screw in a light bulb…? *Tickets become available one week before the show, at 3pm ET.

05/19/16:
ESCAPE
- Prepare a five-minute story about getting away—playing hooky from work, cutting class, flying south for the winter, or getting out of that ironclad gym contract. Tell us about your Houdini moment! The bitter isolation or glittering freedom of being on the lam. Now let’s get the hell out of Dodge! *Tickets become available one week before the show, at 3pm ET.

06/16/16:
FATHERS:
Prepare a five-minute STORY* about a father. A rolling stone or a rock, chronically absent or overbearingly present. Shotgun weddings, the Dad-Daughter Dance, father-son bonding. Patriarchs and father-figures. Becoming a father or finding one. *Storytellers, this must be a story! Not an homage or character sketch of your dearly beloved or not-so-revered male parental unit. This needs to be a true STORY where a father, and his fatherly-ness, is central to the plot. Action, not homage. *Tickets become available one week before the show, at 3pm ET.

*Tickets for each show become available one week before the show, at 3pm ET.
